Elks Carnival 1921?

Elks Carnival 1921?

100 years of Elks in Hawai’i: Elks Carnival 1921?

It’s summer! Ice Cream! Carnivals! Fairs! Right? Well, Yes and No.

Hawaii Elks were known for carnivals, but in February, not summer. Starting in 1911, Elks 616 put on a winter carnival. The fundraising events became part of Honolulu’s celebration of Washington’s Birthday and early floral parades were scheduled to coincide. These ladies selling Purity Ice Cream are surely Elk wives and daughters. Elk Trustee Carl Reber remembers a Purity Inn ice cream parlor at Keeaumoku and Beretania. Later, Meadow Gold made ice cream on the same corner.
